Last year, Infection Control Today published an article that spoke about infection prevention in hospitals. Per verbatim, the article stated that: “The first thing to keep in mind as COVID-19 case counts decline that it’s not really going away for good.” Ward-Fore who is a member of Infection Control Today’s Editorial Advisory Board said that a second wave is coming. He said that we don’t know when or how bad it might be. So be prepared.
Currently, vaccines are already available or still in the process of being transported and getting ready for the vaccination with the corresponding population in different countries all over the world. Despite the presence of the vaccines, there are healthcare facilities that may never return to the old normal as per The Hepacart blog. We can expect key health trends in 2021 as COVID-19 has redefined the standards of healthcare facilities. Some practices in dealing with it will become permanent not only in healthcare facilities but in every public space. The pandemic has taught us a lesson about cleanliness, infection control and safety.
We have heard in the news about the COVID-19 virus variants which were reported as more deadly, spread more easily and quickly. There may be some speculations or doubt if the COVID-19 vaccine will work against these new variants. According to John Hopkins Medicine, people who have received the vaccines should watch for changes in guidance from the CDC and still continue with Coronavirus safety precautions to reduce the risk of infection. With this new information, the wearing of face masks, physical distancing and hand hygiene are still highly recommended.
Just recently this month of February 2021, Medical News Today shared a recent COVID-19 outbreak update. It said that the new Coronavirus variants may be a cause for concern. But, some COVID-19 vaccines may overall remain effective against the new variants. This is even if the neutralizing ability of the antibodies these vaccines generate may be slightly lower.
With the new variants of the Coronavirus, there is still a need for the public to continue to protect themselves. Healthline suggested eight ways to protect yourself from the new Coronavirus strains. Club Clean, a leading commercial cleaning company based in Michigan City IN, believes that these suggestions are very beneficial.
There are some very important points to consider in dealing with the new Coronavirus variants:
GET VACCINATED
The very first thing to do is to get vaccinated. We now have the Coronavirus vaccines in the US. The new variants may require a new or changed vaccine, but getting vaccinated is critical to slow the spread specially to persons that are at high risk with the contamination and spread.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Protect yourself with the use of barrier protection usually made of acrylic plastic or plexiglass. As much as possible, limit social gatherings and time spent in crowded spaces. And, among these preventive measures are the following:
- Wear a Mask and Face Shield
According to CDC and recent studies, wearing a face mask can reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 more commonly known as Coronavirus. Mask can be sufficient to stop enough the droplets from getting through when worn properly with seals above the nose and around the chin. It should completely cover the nose and mouth and perfectly fit on the face. Wearing a face shield can add up some extra layer of protection.
- Practice Good Hygiene
The practice of good hygiene such as hand washing frequently with soap and water or the application of hand sanitizer or alcohol is still recommended by CDC. Recommended hand washing with soap and water is for at least 20 seconds. Carry in your pouch a sanitizer that must contain at least 60 percent alcohol to immediately sanitize your hands after touching risky door knobs and other places in public areas.
- Clean, Sanitize and Disinfect
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 are circulating globally. We now know that these new Corona virus variants cause concerns. But, routine and maintenance cleaning and disinfecting with the products approved by EPA and recommended by CDC are still the best defense.
